Common Heat and Air Issues

At Royal Blue Hill Heat and Air, Inc. we frequently receive complaints about problems with room-to-room airflow in homes. There are many reasons your vents may be restricted or have low airflow to them. In some cases, it may make a room in your home feel uncomfortable. In most cases, a quick HVAC test will reveal it can be fixed.

DIRTY FILTER

When was the last time you changed your AC filter?

That filter has an important job to remove dust and debris from the air and keep it out of your equipment and your ducts. If the filter gets overloaded and clogged, it can lead to hot or cold spots and stuffy air.

Some of the common particles on dirty filters include:

  • Pollen
  • Dust mites
  • Textile and carpet fibers
  • Mold spores
  • Dust
  • Pet dander
  • Bacteria
  • Tobacco smoke

Debris in the equipment can damage parts as well. Be sure to change your AC filter once a month or according to the manufacturer’s instructions.

DIRTY COILS

Your AC condenser coil has the important job of removing heat from the air and releasing it. Since its part of the outdoor unit and exposed to the elements, the coil can get so dirty that it can’t release heat. Then your unit has to work harder and hotter trying to cool your home. Be sure to schedule your preventative maintenance cleaning twice a year.

LOW REFRIGERANT CHARGE

This is one of the most common problems with HVAC systems, especially older ones that have not been maintenance regularly. If your air conditioner is leaking refrigerant you’ll notice reduced cooling. Typically slow leaks cause a gradual decline in system performance. Your HVAC technician can test for leaks and repair them to get things back up to speed.

IMPROPERLY CONNECTED DUCT WORK

This one may seem like a no brainer, but we see it all the time. Each duct run in a home should be designed and installed to deliver a certain amount of air to a certain space. Anything that changes the configuration of that ductwork also changes its ability to deliver the correct amount of air.
If the ductwork restricts airflow your home or business doesn’t receive the air it was designed to receive. The longer the air has to travel and the more turns and bends it has to travel through, the more turbulence is created and the less likely it is to make it where it is intended to go. If the vent is partially crushed run, bent, or kinked piece of flex, and you’re not likely to get the air you’re supposed to.

UNDERSIZED VENTS OR OVERSIZED DUCTWORK

Air moves through the ductwork and to its intended location by maintaining the correct static pressure. If the ductwork is too big, the pressure of the air will drop, never reaching its intended destination.
More often though, the ductwork is too small. This will cause restriction to the point that the measured amount of airflow is not reaching its intended destination.
